About Lexington
Known as the horse capital of the world, Lexington, Kentucky is a fascinating, fun place to visit. It is a lively city with plenty to do and see, all nestled surrounded by exquisite horse farms. Named after an American Revolutionary battle won by the rebels in Lexington, Massachusetts, and the area is located at the heart of the Bluegrass Region. The foundation of limestone beneath the ground enriched water sources and provided the necessary minerals to grow lush, rich grass. More and more Americans moved into the area after 1775 and created wealth from fertile soil and pastureland. Lexington quickly became a hub of cosmopolitanism on the edge of the quickly evolving American frontier; its love of culture and refinement earned it the nickname “Athens of the West.”
Some of the biggest attractions in Lexington are those that revolve around its horse culture. It boasts the Keeneland Race Course, a Thoroughbred racetrack, and the Kentucky Horse Park, host of the FEI World Equestrian Games. The Horse Park itself has many numerous visitor activities, allowing guests to be interactive and “get close to horses.” There are also several ways to experience the local horse and breeding farms, including guided tours, either by car or by horse-drawn carriage. Visitors may also tour the downtown area by carriage.
Kentucky’s other famous staple is bourbon, and there are plenty of opportunities to experience it. There are four different distilleries in Lexington, including Buffalo Trace and Wild Turkey. There are also many places to enjoy a bite to eat downtown, from casual and creative fare to high-end cuisine. Most restaurants offer an American style menu, though there are eateries that have more internationally inspired dishes.
There are a variety of shops downtown to check out as well. The Shops at Lexington Center have over fifty specialty shops to peruse, and there are several other unique places to stop in at on the Center Square and the Victorian Square. In season, there is also a large Farmer’s Market. History buffs will enjoy tours at one of the city’s historic preserved homes, while those who appreciate culture can visit the Kentucky Theatre or the ArtsPlace, headquarters to many Kentucky art groups and exhibits. Lexington also boasts the home court of the University of Kentucky Wildcats’ famous and fiercely competitive basketball team; fans can catch a game during the season.
Lexington, Kentucky, is a vibrant city set in the heart of horse country. No matter what the passion, there is a place for it here. With numerous activities and attractions, Lexington is a real Southeastern gem.
