Dining in Lexington
When you think of romantic weekend getaways, chances are good that Lexington, Kentucky isn't the first place that comes to mind. Yet, surprisingly, Lexington might just be the perfect spot for a few days of relaxing and unwinding away from the hustle and bustle. Known as The Horse Capital Of The World, Lexington is a big city by Kentucky standards, though a small, quaint Southern town too much of the rest of the world. While the rest of the South and most of the East Coast sweats through July and August, when the mercury frequently tops 90 degrees, Lexington has one of the most beautiful summers around. Highs are typically in the low to mid-80's, and the oppressive humidity that covers most of the Southeast misses this charming town entirely. Owing to the beautiful weather, outdoor music festivals abound and most people wouldn't think of spending a beautiful summer day cooped up indoors.
Of course, no trip to Lexington is complete without a culinary tour of the city. The food is hearty Southern fare, but not of the fried chicken, pecan pie, and peach cobbler variety that make states like Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina so popular. The soulful cooking style of cities like Memphis and Nashville, replete with sweet and sticky sauces, fried veggies, and plenty of potatoes largely influence Kentucky’s Southern cooking. Pork is king in Lexington, with pulled pork sandwiches and ribs nearly everywhere. Even seemingly pork-free items like macaroni and cheese, green beans, and pasta salad contain bacon or are prepared with pork fat, so vegetarians and the heart-healthy beware.
Kentucky is also famous for their less-than-subtle alcoholic concoctions, so don't be taken aback by the aggressive flavors of the local bourbon, or the mint Juleps that are seen everywhere on hot summer days. The vibe in Lexington is laid-back and fun-loving, underneath the proper Southern veneer, so the best way to fit right in is to grab a slab of ribs, a wet nap, and a mint julep and prepare to meet some fun and interesting folks. Who cares if it's only noon and your doctor told you to stay away from fatty foods? The horses won't tell.
