Transportation near downtown Lexington, KY is easy to use because the University of Kentucky is near the downtown area. This allows visitors to get around the area without a vehicle because there are enough affordable transportation options to choose from that can get people to the downtown region's bars, restaurants, shopping and to the university.
These options include LexTran bus service and a trolley car service that runs through the heart of the downtown area. Here’s an introductory guide that can help visitors use these services to get around the downtown Lexington area.
LexTran features three express routes and four regular-service routes that travel around the downtown area.
These routes are numbered 12, 14, 15,16,23,26, and 27 respectfully. Busses that travel along these routes stop at several locations on the campus of the University of Kentucky. They also make stops at the Central Baptist Hospital, area stores, the downtown transit center, and Transylvania University. Passengers may use these stops to catch busses and trolleys, which connect these areas to other parts of town to visit nearby bars, restaurants and shopping centers.
Buses travel through the downtown area about every 20-25 minutes during the week and every hour Monday-Saturday from about 5:30 AM- 8:00PM.
However, during the college football season, many busses will extend service so that busses run every 10 minutes from about 7 AM to 8 PM.
LexTran also features two trolley car routes that serve the downtown area.
One of these routes is called the "Blue Route." It runs along the downtown area from the east side across to the west side. The other route is called the "Green Route." It runs along from the north side of the downtown area to the south side. Visitors can use these routes to travel to several area restaurants and shops. Trolleys run approximately every 15 minutes along these routes from about 11 AM- 2 PM and then from 6 PM-1 AM every day.
Passengers can buy single-day fare tickets when they first board the bus. Passengers may also purchase monthly passes at the main transit center, at some area supermarkets, and at the LexTran administrative offices located at 109 West Loundon Street.
Finally, visitors who feel lost can quickly find their way by looking for Nicolasville Road or Manchester Street. These two streets are two of downtown Lexington’s major hubs. Passengers may also use Lexington's downtown transit center as a point of reference. It's located at 200 East Vine Street and serves as the main transportation-meeting place for the community.
